Start++ and Vista

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 7, 2007 11:40 pm

For those of you that use Vista, one of the biggest pet peeves is probably the fact that the cmd prompt doesnt have access to full administrator controls. Well that is a slight problem, especialy if you work for a helpdesk. So how do you get around that slight annoyance and get all your programs, anytime you want, to run as an administrator? How bout if you had sudo installed for windows. Wait. Sudo. Thats a Linux thing right? Well yes. By default, it is built into Linux and is only for Linux, however, there is somethign else that is important to note. With windows, if you create programs, you can have them start up and take parameters. You can then, use this to your advantage. So this is how it works. You download and install the program from its website. Download the program and install it. Once you install it, click on the windows start button, and in the windows start search, type sudo and then the program you which to run in admin mode. So if I wanted to run the command prompt in admin mode, I would just type sudo cmd at the start search box. Pretty sime eh? With this same ability, I can run any other program in admin mode. Pretty sweet eh? Thought so!

Wanna see what sort of site I like to see?

Kinda a scary thought, isn’t it? But yeah, you can see what sort of links I have on there. Not all of them are deep, theological, or funny or technical. There are a random assortment of things on there as I come across them…..I come across a lot of the links through stumble. Man, has that become one of my best friends for finding information. Information that I didn’t think that I would be able to find otherwise…..

Speaking of random…..

I am now in the PGS program. My classes start in Feburary. Its kinda a bummer since they are on a Thursday night(youth group night) but that is ok. I have to get my degree, and I already talked to the youth leader about it, and he’s cool with it. It’s not like I am cutting out fully on them and leaving them or something. No, I will still be involved as much as I possibly can, although what that will look like now, who knows.

Still setting up my laptop after turning in my old one. Man, this thing is gonna need a memory upgrade to keep up with what I would like to do. I ain’t that advanced, and I need more than the 512 that the computer comes with…I wonder how much a gig stick would cost? Nah, too expensive!

Well, I refound out why I like PHP Designer 2005(2006 beta) so much. Maybe I should list why here….

  1. The interface is nice. A little cluttered at first, but really easy to remove the clutter
  2. It can use the php interpreter on the computer(php.exe) to run your php code without having to upload it to a web server….even nicer….
  3. Built in FTP program. This would be nicer if my computer could not directly connect to the computer to place the files up on there(its on the network at work/school)
  4. Syntex highlighting depending on which language you are prgramming in.
  5. Ability to copy the files and synchronize them for offline use. This is handy, especially if for some reason I loose my connection to the share drive which I mapped which has the files. This wasy I can then go in and still work on the files, and then when the connection is re-established, be able to send them back to the server and have my content automatically updated….

Ok, this is enough for now….time to go….and cause havoc on the world.

8 Years Later

pdearmen| December 7, 2005 9:28 pm

Its been 8 years to the day today since my life completly changed. Well, the full 8 day mark was @ 12:02 AM since it occured on 12/7/97 @ 12:02 AM.

Its amazing to think how that one event which has occured has changed my life so much.

I know I haven’t updated this blog that much. Been a little on the busy side this past month or so.

So what have i been busy with?

School, work, trying to keep a social life. Trying to continue to convince people that Me and Angel are not dancing—although they always fight me and say that we are dating…….it will never stop will it?

Well, the only thing that is really going on right now is that I am doing some projects for work. Yeah, thats about it.

Anything other than that? Students are leaving the school soon, so I will be having a little more free time to update the blog soon…..yeah….coming up—-more blogs–maybe….

Needed a break

I neede a break from PHP(currently in the process of revamping almost all of TIMS to go with suggestions of people to make it better!) so I decided to try my hand at perl a little. And guess what. My first program is done on it. Now it is nothing that big and special. In fact, i’m kinda ashamed about how simple it is. But it works. It relies heavily on Linux and its ability to read information from the battery. Basically all it does is read information from a text like file in linux, and displays the results/computations on the screen. But hey, it works, kinda got an idea how perl is similar and different to php and other languages I know. I like pearl. I wonder if I can get this to work in php well. I have some more fun things to research now!

Why I hate mornings….

So I would like to say that I officially hate mornings…..let me rephrase that. I hate Tuesday/Thursday mornings. Not only are they starting extremly stinking early—but they last all day! Oh well. I choose this life. Next year it will start to get easier eventually. I mean, this is my first year undertaking all of this…so it should be hard—ow well. That is life. I am taking it all in stride. Life could definatly be worse than it is. Saving for a new car(hopefully the current wagon lasts until then) and saving to start paying off college loan payments.

Speaking of fun life……

Got a letter last night. A company where I borrowed money from for school sent me one of those “oh oh” letters. They shipped a bunch of info about me to a third party(unnamed) on an unencrypted cd in the maili. Information which this cd contained includes, but is not limited to, social security, last name, address, credit history, credit ratings………..yeah…….

Yeah, today during lunch I will be calling the three credit companies and putting fraud alerts on my account—this will be fun.

Well class is about to start—yeah classes!

Wow

So

Yeah

Thats about all I got these days. I am looking into getting a new car. Mine might last me anotehr year if I treat it good. So I definatly need to start saving up, so I can get a car that will not only treat me good but last a while. Here is where people start coming out of the woodwork saying “you should get X becasue it is a sweet car” Well I am here to say that I am getting what I want. And what I want is a small suv. Reason? 1) still has good gas mileage 2)not the most expensive vehicle out there 3) can transport my amp. Ah my amp. The number one thing that it has to be able to transport. So yeah, that is why I have decided to go that route. Right now I am actually looking at the Kia Sportage. But first before I decide if I am going to get the vehicle, I have to do one thing. What is that one thing? Consolidate my student loans into one. Ah, yes, the power of student loans. I love them so much……

Ok, so I don’t. But I can be annoying when I want? Righ?

Well I got wireless working on my linux! Am I excited? Dang right I am!

So…

pdearmen| September 19, 2005 7:08 pm

So its been over a month since my last post.

Whats new?

1) I got the job I was interviewing for. Whew. I actually had no idea how that one would go. But I guess I did well enough in the interviews to let Bryan take a chance on me.

Other than that. Just finished ordering my orinco card. I love those things. Even thoughts its only B rated, it provides the greatest compatability in linux. That is what is the best about it.

What else?

Oh yeah. There was a news story released which goes against conventional wisdom on the internet right now. Symantec has stated that Internet Explorer is more secure than Firefox. Now there is a suprise and a kicker.

Finally moved into the house, its been fun there. Interesting would more be the key word. I live with some great people. Even though I am hardly there I must admit. Its still great.

Well…time to go…time to have fun!

Interview

pdearmen| August 8, 2005 11:20 pm

So today I had my interview for TechSupport as the Helpdesk Analyst. Thats a fancy way of saying sitting up front and answering phones and helping those who walk in. Its cool. I enjoy it. It’s basically what I have been doing all summer long. :-D Well anyways. I had two interviews today. First one was with Bryan, Jason, and Andrej. That was probably the most nervous cause I didn’t know what to expect. That was at 11:30. Then at 2:30 I had the interview with ISOT. Now that was interesing. The reason being is that they are all from differnt departments. Database services, Technology Support, Network Operations, Library, ITC, and then our VP. SO variety is the key apparently! And it as interesting cause the questions were more varied, but it was then good at the same time. I was unsure of how I had done in the interviews, but afterward while talking to Bryan really quick at the end of the day he reassured me that I did well. So that is a good thing I am assuming.

Tomorrow I have some testing at HR. That will be….who knows. Bryan didn’t say exactly what it was other than that it was standard HR testing. ???? Anyone have any idea what standard HR testing is? I will just go into it like I went into the interviews today. Unsure of what to expect, but ready to handle whatever comes my way. It worked today, although I will admit it took some strength today due to the higher level of stress/anxiety than normal. But it turned out fine. I went and saw the Deats at work and then we went to Subway. Came back. I ate my sub, walked back to the room, talked to Sophie for a min and then logged onto PSO for a bit. The day had me woren out so I took a two hour nap, got up and now here I am. :-D

Well for now I am living out of garbage bags until I figure out if I am staying on campus or moving out. Either way my life is about to get very intersing very fast. I will keep this updated with the randomness of life that I am having. Oh, and by the way—the next “update” to tims now consists of 29 different things. WHEW. From 10 to 29.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

pdearmen| July 29, 2005 4:56 pm

Well, not on the litteral road, lol.

More like on the virtual road again. The road of TIMS. I got ten nice new updates planned for TIMS, coming soon to a local intranet on CU. Those updates(with one which I just completed included…I will mark it…) are….

1) Reorganize Menus
2) “Softcode” list of statuses
3) Mainentence meu(maybe—might throw into the weekly check)
4) Inventory Menu
5) Summary Menu
6) Remove an old and outdated report(and all things tied to it)(DONE!)
7) Add “decommissioned” status to printers, and then update reports accordingly to handle this new status of printers 8) Fix bug in “Add New Printers” function
9) Reduce false positives on the printer monitor
10) Rename all tables to start with TIMS_

These are gonna be fun to implement. Some are not too bad. Such as the bug in Add New Printers. Some of the other one(mainly all the menu re-organizations) will be a pain to deal with. Cause that will cause a relinking in some of the areas, so I will have to make sure those links follow all the way through. Some of the other ones will also be interesting. Such as the summary menu. That will be javascript based(maybe…) and will more than likely be a pain in the rear end to do. The one that is most important is number 2. That one is critical. I have found that as firmwares are updated and printers change model numbers, they might have different statuses for how they determine if printer cartridges are low or missing. So in the past(at the very get go) I hard coded those parameters into the system. Now as our network of printers are starting to change, I find that there will be a need to change these possible in the future. And harcoding these into the system will not do. I need to store these in a database and then load them when needed, store them in an array, and then go through the array to determine if that is one of the status messages of a printer that indicate that it is missing a toner cartridge. This way the list of statuses can be updates without having to go into the code of TIMS itself and change it.

The other pain one will be reducing the number of false positives on the monitor. That will be fun cause at this moment I have no way to do it speedily. I can do it, but it will slow the system way down…..think think think

I keep these updates coming at TIMS like this and pretty soon it will have to transition over to 2.0 becuase none of the original code will be around!

Oh well, no time to chat, family is almost here, adios all!

Congratulations

Crazy Day

pdearmen| July 15, 2005 1:54 pm

Its a crazy day. Yes it is. Heck, when is one of my normal work days not crazy?

Been a full week back at work, an dI still feel like I am playing catchup from the week I was gone at home. It was worth it going home though, as a lot of stuff had to be done around the house. It was also just nice to have a week and relax a little, although I don’t know how you can call laboring out in the hot sun relaxing at all. But like I said, it had to be done, so I didn’t mind one bit. It was kinda a different pace than sitting down behind a desk all week, ya know?

Well today was entertaining. I discovered that I am allergic to tuna fish. Not deadly allergic. Just allergic enough where it becomes puffy right above my eye-brows. My mom first noticed the puffiness this past Sunday when I was at home. I had some tuna fish that saturday in the form of tuna salad. One of my favorite meals. I have also had tuna all this week in the form of panera. Hmm…I love their tuna salad sandwich there. But the puffiness has been getting worse and worse as the week has been going on, as a direct result of the tuna. Guess I will have to stay away from it for a while.

Other than that, I have decided that once the position becomes available, I will try out and apply for the position. If I don’t get the position than I don’t get it. Eh? Oh well. That’s ok. I’m ready to take all that comes my way.

Well as far as for other fun and new things that are going on in my life. Nothing much else is happening. I have started playing pso blue burst. I love this latest incarnation of PSO. It’s on the computer. Has a brand new episode. And also has new items and other fun things which seems to streamline the story a little bit more. So far I have recreated my two favorite characters on there. I have Nina which is a Fonewarl(female Newman force) and Gus, my RaMar(male human ranger). Both of them are excelling nicely right now. Can’t wait till I get a few more levels up with each of them as they progress through the story, and eventually through episode 4. Although for my force it will be a little while before she is able to get out there……..

Anything else new? No, not that I can think of. There are a few “fun” things such as just daily work routines. Right now we are in the middle of swapping out the old D600’s(2003 model) to the new D610’s. Lets just say there is a big jump in performance there. Actually, a really big jump. Not so much processor wise, although there is a jump there because of the fact that the processor(if I am correct) has some more cache. It also is faster processor—by maybe 200 MHZ tops. Not a lot, but still, being able to pull a little more juice out of somethign is always good.

Well I should get going I guess. I mean, I do have some work to do, although right now there is a little bit of a lull. But I do have some catching up of some things to do. Like what? I don’t know. I will find something to do. I can always find something to do here at work. There is always some paper work or something along those lines to do. And of course….there is always TIMS to complete working on………..
