Security: Credit Caurd Fraud So Easy in the US

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 25, 2007 6:07 pm

So on a previous post, I mentioned how I have been able to use my card with the void part visible. To test out how easy it is to commit credit card fraud(if it wan’t my card) was I started handing it to people with the void facing up. And…so far no one has said anything….and ive spent well over a five hundred in the stores and nothing……how depressing….shouldnt the credit card companies or the companies accepting the card like this be held responsible in some way? I would think and hope so. I think that things like this need to be changed. I am going to continue to use the card until i get told no….wonder how many days that will be…..

“Never underestimate the power of stupid people in a crowd”–Demotivators

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 16, 2007 2:49 pm

I remember that quote(or something really close to it) from a Demotivator I once came across. It showed a large group of people skydiving, but there was supposedly something different. Since I have been so many times……..yeah. I couldn’t tell you if they were doing something right, wrong, or what. I don’t know. All I do know is that it has a point. Never underestimate the stupidity of a group of people together. This is true for both everyday human interaction and online interaction between people that probably really don’t know one another. Now don’t get me wrong, this has led to some of the funnest times in the past, and I have enjoyed every single time that a group of us get together and acted just stupid. There is a difference between acting stupid and having fun and acting stupid and trying to seem cool. There is nothign inherintly wrong with that, in fact, I say embrace this. Its just a way and a time to have fun. But what is funny is when this same group/crowd mentality floats into the digital word and all of a sudden something is “cool”. In fact, the #1 viral video of the summer(and #2 of the year 2007 so far apparently) has been a little song called “Chocolate Rain”. Haven’t heard of it? Let me give you a sample of some of the lyrics and let your own brain be the judge of it.
Chocolate Rain:
Chocolate Rain
Some stay dry and others feel the pain
Chocolate Rain
A baby born will die before the sin

Chocolate Rain
The school books say it can’t be here again
Chocolate Rain
The prisons make you wonder where it went

So there are the lyrics, and they continue on down the page, the same format. And the song. Same format, same repeating drum loops, same repetition of the words. So monotone. Its actually kinda boring, and yet, it is the number one summer viral video. How you may ask. Again, this comes in the power of the group to spread and make the content assimilated into modern culture. The guy who sings it is 25 and has a pretty deep voice(nothign of which has been heard in my family I dare say), and for a singer, the voice is decent. Don’t get me wrong at all on that. I never once said that his singing abilities wernt the best—of course—im such a good judge as to what makes a good and a bad singer—so I should judge all that come through……or not….

Ok. So if your brave enough to hear this song/video, then here you go. Follow this link.

Carlton Pearson: The false prophet(post 1 of ?)

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 15, 2007 8:18 pm

I was sitting at home watching the news when an MSNBC video caught my eye on the tv. It was titled “To Hell and Back”, and it started with an interview with a supposed pastor. The person they were interviewing: Carlton Pearson. So I sat down and watched it. It wasn’t too long until I literally had to bring my jaw back up from the floor. There have been some crazy things that I have heard from some crazy pastors, all of which are crazy, but still pretty biblically sane. Well this guy, I think he has had to have had some crazy pills or something to even have gotten this far. Here is a summary of what his beliefs are(taken from ondoctrine.com)

A. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross and His resurrection paid the price for all of humanity to have eternal life in heaven, without any requirement to repent of sins and receive salvation.

B. Belief in Jesus Christ, is not necessary for a person to go to heaven. Salvation is unconditional, granted by the grace of God to every human being.

C. It is presumed that all of humanity will have its destiny in heaven, whether they realize it or not.

D. All of humanity will go to heaven regardless of their religious affiliation, including those who believe in false religions or adopt any other form of religious persuasion, or who have no religious persuasion.

E. Only those who have “tasted of the fruits” of real intimacy with Christ and have “intentionally and consciously rejected” the grace of God will spend eternity separated from God.

F. There are persons in some type of hell, but the emphasis is “to get away from the picture of an angry, intolerant God. I don’t see God that bitter.”

Reading over that a few times, it took me by total surprise. The story of his journey is that he had at one time he heard God talk to him in his head while he was watching the news and that through this he learned that Hell doesn’t exist and that Hell was the current living on earth. According to him, everyone is destined for heaven whether they believe in Christ or not. When he was interviewed, he said that he has received tons of letters from athiests, gays, lesbians, and said how much they are all touched by his message that they too are going to heaven. I find it crazy that this guy has been able to deceive so many people. Of course, this is the way things go when a person is able to make their own truth. In the interview he said that he thinks of the bible as an idol, but it is not the end all to end all on things. I also find it interesting that the church the helped relaunch his career was a church that promoted that being gay/lesbian is acceptable in the church and that its not a sin. Lots of interesting things in this last paragraph.

But the thing about it that makes me worry the most is that he has been starting to gain acceptance among some. This false doctrine, this lie that he is spreading is surely a cause for concern and harm. The problem is, it is the traditional evangelical community that has brought some of this on. Wait. What?
Ok. So its not all of the Evangelical community, but a certain part of it. That part is the part that refuses to talk about hell. They refuse to do so because the thought of Hell may upset of cause the unsaved to be insulted. Thats ridiculous. Its a part of life, and a truth, and one that if continued to be thought of like this, will only allow this heresy to continue and spread.

Thats all I got for now…but I have a lot more thoughts on this subject.

Insecurity at home

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 12, 2007 4:43 pm

I love how security is such an important thing. In fact, I pretty much got a little sick today thinking about something. In a time when credit card fraud is on the rise, you would think that companies would take great care to make sure that cards are valid and that they are being used by the correct person. Well as I was pulling up to get a bean burrito for dinner from the local Taco Bell, I noticed something. My bank card has been for a few months now void. How is it void you may ask? Well the back portion where you are supposed to sign is(due to heavy use) worn off and the words void show through where the strip used to be. And whats crazy is I have used it like this for months, passing it to cashiers, waiters, etc…..they have looked at it, handed it back to me with the stip side up, and not one has said anything. Only one time have I ever been asked for my Drivers License to make sure it s really me who is using the card. That kinda makes me a little on the sick side. What I want to know is why isn’t there more security around things like this? I shouldve been carded multiple times, and shouldve been escorted by police as well just to make sure that I wasn’t trying to commit fraud. Ah how I love things like this.

Come on people!

labels_5.jpg

Normally I dont find it that hard to see how companies can come up with stupid warning labels. But I saw this one on a website and just about had it. How crazy/annoying/stupid has the legal system become that they have to come up with the warning found on the image above?(In case you didn’t click on the image…it says: “Warning: This item moves when used”) So what is this oh so dangerous product that it has to have such an obvious warning on it? Well? Any guesses?

…anything….

Well its a warning label for a scooter. Now I know the hairbrained lawsuits that come through the courts daily pretty much warrent this sort of behavior, but is it really not that obvious to the average joe that when they use a scooter that it will…oh I don’t know…move? Thats pretty much the one guarantee of the scooter. Unless it has a broken wheel and then its one wheel joe’s scooter and he walks it to school because he refuses to believe that it really is broken. Warnings like this make me think that the movie Idiocracy is not that long far from happening. Instead of having these warnings on the labels, we should do what the liberal media and society likes to teach. We should let “evolution” take over and let natural selection weed out those from the population that should die. Now don’t get me wrong, im not saying that stupid people should die. Nor anyone with a learning disability. What im saying is that if your skull is so thick to the point that you can’t realize that when you use a scooter that it moves…..well….then maybe you should do the genetic code a favor and quickly remove yourself from it. Of course, thats just one crazy man’s opinion on the subject matter.

Start++ and Vista

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 7, 2007 11:40 pm

For those of you that use Vista, one of the biggest pet peeves is probably the fact that the cmd prompt doesnt have access to full administrator controls. Well that is a slight problem, especialy if you work for a helpdesk. So how do you get around that slight annoyance and get all your programs, anytime you want, to run as an administrator? How bout if you had sudo installed for windows. Wait. Sudo. Thats a Linux thing right? Well yes. By default, it is built into Linux and is only for Linux, however, there is somethign else that is important to note. With windows, if you create programs, you can have them start up and take parameters. You can then, use this to your advantage. So this is how it works. You download and install the program from its website. Download the program and install it. Once you install it, click on the windows start button, and in the windows start search, type sudo and then the program you which to run in admin mode. So if I wanted to run the command prompt in admin mode, I would just type sudo cmd at the start search box. Pretty sime eh? With this same ability, I can run any other program in admin mode. Pretty sweet eh? Thought so!

Boy I let this get old…

paul.e.dearment.jr| September 6, 2007 6:16 pm

Looking at my posts, I guess its been a while since I last posted on here. To anyone who still does read this pretty much abandoned blog, im sorry. I will try to post more. With that said….

I’ve been using windows vista for a long time now(since beta 2 release) and I have noticed some things with it. The first thing is that unlike windows Xp, it does not slow down or seem to get as bogged up like XP. Why? Probably because of the lack or registry changes that can be done without approval by the user. So yes, UAC does seem to work pretty well. Not only does it prevent virus/spyware from installing or bad things to work, the thing also just keeps the system from getting gunked up. So since I have been using Vista for so long, I thought I would share some of the best kept secrets of Vista that you just can’t live without!(and your laptop will thank you).

First Off:
Power Managment in Vista. One of the nice things that make Vista so much more appealing than Windows XP for laptops is the ability to control power managment. If you go to Power Options under the control panel, you can then click on “change plan settings” under the power management sceheme you wish to work with(probably power saver). If you click on change advanced power settings, you will then be presented with some more options. In this menu, you can change two very important items. The two items that you can change is the minimum and maximum processor state. You can change it for both on battery and on ac adapter. For maximum battery, I set the minimum to 1% and the maximum to no more than 15% on battery. This reduces the speed of the processor, allowing it to run cooler and use less energy. If your doing work on the internet and on papers(using word or some other word processing program) then there is no need to have the full power of the processor turned on. You don’t need all that extra power.

Ok, so now that you have saved some power in your battery is there anything else that you can do to help? Why yes there is! First thing—the Vista sidebar! The Vista sidebar, especially if you have multiple widgets on it, can constantly use your processor, and by constantly using your processor, it uses your power. When you need to truly expand your power, turn off the sidebar! Another thing to do to help lighten the load on the graphics card is to turn off Aero when on battery. So how can both be done? Well glad you asked. Someone from work sent me a link to the following site. The site is: Microsoft Codeplex. The file runs, and is able to work perfectly on Vista. I’ll let you know how effective this program is, but, since it follows the necessary rules for saving power, it should work just fine.

Ok, now you know how to save some battery in Vista, is there anything else that can be of use? Well. Yes, yes there is! What that is, well, guess you will have to find out later huh?
