Upgrading is a scary thing…..

paul.e.dearment.jr| October 31, 2006 6:25 am

Two upgrades come my way today. The first being that of a lovely upgrade to wordpress. This one went a lot smoother than the last upgrade, as it actually selected the same theme that I had had before. I just had to copy over the modified versions of them to get it to work properly(it was showing all the posts on one page!) So here is to hoping that it works properly. The list of changes for Wordpress 2.0.5 blog can be found here

There are other upgrades to mention right now as well.

The first being that Windows Media Player 11 was released either today or a day or two ago. Man. Media Player 11 + IE7. Microsoft is trying to Vistatize Windows XP. I’m installing it now. Lets see how it plays. The betas were ok, so I’m expecting big things out of this stuff.

Speaking of IE7, I think that the blasphamy truck will hit me, but I almost like it better than firefox 2.0. The main reason? It doesn’t crash on me or reset my settings randomly! That is the most annoying thing that firefox 2.0 has done so far. Other than that, they are both solid browsers. I think with IE7, Microsoft can finally give firefox a run for their money(and no, I am not a microsoft fan-boy….I just like good solid software!)

Need to find a really big file fast?

paul.e.dearment.jr| October 27, 2006 6:46 am

Are you noticing that your hard drive has been filling up recently and you need to quickly and easily find out where the big files are? Well, luckliy there is a program out there that can do that for you in a jif! So what is this magic program? Its called Sequoia View. You can customize how it highlights while scrolling over it. You can have it highlight the entire folder that you are in so you can see how large that folder is as a whole compared to the rest of the drive. Makes it really easy to get a full view of all the files. I was(using this) able to loacte my really large files and eliminate the ones I didn’t need. This allowed me to free up about 6 gigs on my laptops hard drive, which is a good thing when working on a laptop! I have posted below some screen shots of sequoia view(ok, well actually one) This is a good program to have in your toolbox!

Firefox 2.0….

paul.e.dearment.jr| October 23, 2006 4:26 pm

First, IE7 came out
And then…less than a week later…..Firefox 2.0 came out. I knew they were coming along soon, but this is ridiculous. At least, thats what I have to say about it. So I haven’t had too much time to work with Firefox 2.0 yet, but so far I like it. Check it out though. A review(and pretty pictures too) can be found here: Mozilla News

IE7 + Opera(and not of the brower variety)

paul.e.dearment.jr| October 19, 2006 5:47 am

Microsoft has finally done it. They have gone and released IE7 to the world in its final form. So far with testing it, I have not found out too many oddities that it has done. Its major weirdness comes from a css rendering that it does, but we will see if that is a bug or a feature.

I broke my no opera rule yesterday. Its a rule that had been in place for a long long time. The rule stated that I would not willingly go to an opera if I could get out of it. Well, yesterday was the final dress rehersal for Madam Butterfly, so I ended up going. I went because of one Komodo(”Look, a Komodo in a Komono”) was in the opera and she had a solo! Sweet. The times went well, and the three hours went ok. The second hour of the opera probably went the best and the fastest. I actually enjoyed the opera, which is weird. I think certain people will have a heart attack now that I admitted to liking the opera. But such is life, right?

AIM Virus removal toolkit:

paul.e.dearment.jr| October 17, 2006 5:17 am

AIM viruses are annoying, and are always around. So here are some tools that you will want to have in your toolkit to remove those nasty items:

1) jayloden.com This guy wrote the first AIM virus remover and continues to update it. He will eventually release an open source framework for his project, so be on the lookout to this guys site.

2) Security Task Manager Great process viewer which ranks processes based upon certain charecteristics. Also can show you the hex dump of the file in a small window(in plain text mode) which you can use to diagnose problems with. Great for finding out which processes depend on each other

3) Bart PE While a great tool, make sure to read the legal information regarding it. Allows you to boot into windows off of a cd, and delete files without being bothered by rootkits, etc… Great tool to have in any toolkit.

So I was taking a look at a post on someone’s blog(here) when I saw that all girls were associated with his face. I thought that it was weird, and decided to try it out myself. Here are some of the results.

Why do I get the girls too?

And the famous JG

I think the best one there is Usher

Of course, Tomisito has some good ones too…

And then there is angel….

And ma deats

And Marky Tjapkey

And Johny B

Faster Office

paul.e.dearment.jr| 6:01 am

I love Open Office. Always have, always will(and the fact that it is free is better :-D) One thing about open office, though, is that it takes SO LONG to do anythign at times. Well, there is a way around that. How you might ask? Use the portable version of Open Office. It actually runs faster. Why? Don’t ask me why. But it does. It runs fast enough that you could easily load it off a memory key(hence why it is portabe)

To grab this jewel(which doesn’t require an install) go here: Open Office Portable

To integreate it into the system takes a little more time, but that will be another article….

Funny Pic

This is a funny picture that I couldn’t pass up. I found it floating around on the web, with the word already spelled incorrectly. I used despair’s despair generator to recreate the same exact experience with the correct spelling. Oh how I like diy.despair.com
Enjoy the pic below:
